Cardiovascular Disease Update: Hypertension, Cardiac Disease, Stroke is organized by Southern Medical Association (SMA) and will be held from Sep 04, 2018 - Sep 04, 2019. This Conference has been approved for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

Target Audience :
This activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and other allied healthcare professionals specializing or certified in the areas of women’s health, gynecology, obstetrics, internal medicine, family or general medicine, geriatric medicine, emergency medicine, and preventive medicine.

Goals and Objectives :
Cardiovascular Disease continues to be the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States and now globally. Hypertension also remains one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease including heart disease (coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, left ventricular hypertrophy, and arrhythmias) and cerebrovascular disease (stroke). Given this importance, reviewing the management and treatment of hypertension, heart disease, and stroke is critical to practicing clinicians and particularly those in primary care settings. Specifically, newer methods and treatment paradigms for increasing the control rates of hypertension are critically needed. Such new measures include more frequent patient office visits, the use of simple and standardized pharmacologic treatment algorithms, and fixed-dose combination pharmacologic anti-hypertensive therapy. The treatment of individuals with acute and chronic stroke especially when, how and to what level to lower an elevated blood pressure is critical to improving the morbidity and mortality of stroke. In addition, despite newer and effective therapies, the morbidity and mortality of congestive heart failure continues to be a major health issue. These areas will be reviewed and newer treatment modalities of these clinical conditions will be discussed. Upon completion of the activity, providers should be able to:
• Discuss, detail and emphasize newer treatment modalities to increase the control rates of individuals with hypertension through efforts to reduce clinical inertia such as the use of pharmacologic treatment algorithms and fixed-dose antihypertensive agents;
• Review the most recent guidelines on the acute and chronic treatment of stroke including when, how and to what level to reduce blood pressure when elevated;
• Implement newer treatment modalities in the treatment of chronic congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease.
