OVERVIEW

This CME/CE course on Cardiac Screening in Young Athletes provides a comprehensive examination of cardiovascular health assessment for youth participating in sports. With sudden cardiac arrest being a leading cause of death among young athletes during physical exertion, early recognition and proper screening are critical. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of identifying underlying cardiac abnormalities that may predispose athletes to sudden events. The course explores current recommendations for pre-participation screening, including medical history, physical examination, and potential use of ECGs. It also addresses common cardiac conditions seen in young athletes, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. Learners will also examine legal, ethical, and psychosocial aspects related to athletic disqualification and clearance. Through practical strategies, the course empowers clinicians to make informed decisions that prioritize athlete safety while supporting athletic participation. This training is especially beneficial for pediatricians, family practitioners, sports medicine physicians, and allied health professionals involved in youth athletic care and screening protocols.

Educational Objectives

  • Identify common cardiac conditions in young athletes that may increase the risk of sudden cardiac events during sports participation.
  • Describe evidence-based pre-participation cardiovascular screening protocols, including history, physical examination, and diagnostic testing.
  • Implement strategies to ensure safe athletic participation, balancing risk mitigation with ethical considerations and psychosocial well-being.

Who Should Do This Course

This course is ideal for Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and Registered Nurses involved in primary care, sports medicine, pediatrics, cardiology, or emergency medicine. It is particularly beneficial for professionals working in school-based health programs, youth sports organizations, or clinics offering pre-participation physicals.
