Description:
The bedside cardiac monitor is an important nursing assessment tool to gain information regarding a patient’s clinical condition. Knowledge and skill related to accurate arrhythmia interpretation, ST segment alarms, and QT interval changes are essential for the achievement of quality patient outcomes. This mastery session integrates evidence-based knowledge with skill building. Key skill sets include differentiation of right and left bundle branch block from ventricular tachycardia morphology, recognition of patterns and location of ischemia and injury, accurate assessment of the QT interval and the use of the “Lewis” lead in atrial arrhythmias. Alarm management, documentation practices and critical thinking algorithms for lead selection are included. Participants learn strategies for successfully implementing recommendations from the newly published AACN practice alerts for dysrhythmia monitoring and ST segment monitoring.

Objectives:
• Relate lead selection to the 3 primary purposes for bedside cardiac monitoring.
• Utilize QRS morphology in lead V1 to differentiate VT from SVT with bundle branch block.
• Apply knowledge of injury and ischemia detection on the 12-lead ECG to ST segment bedside monitoring.
