OVERVIEW

Breast Cancer Screening in BC is organized by University of British Columbia Continuing Professional Development (UBC CPD).

Overview:
This online continuing medical education is best suited to family physicians and other primary care providers who are interested in learning more about breast cancer prevention and screening in BC.

The current BC Cancer Breast Screening policy is based on best evidence, and also aligns with elements of the Canadian Task Force on Preventative Health Care (CTFPHC) guidelines on breast cancer screening for women at average risk, aged 40 to 75+ years. These guidelines were last updated in 2018, with ongoing emphasis on informed decision making and consideration of individual values, and encouragement of patients to have discussions with primary care providers.

At the end of the module, you should be able to:

  • Interpret and use the current provincial recommendations for breast cancer screening
  • Identify the modifiable risk factors of breast cancer
  • Identify the hereditary and other non-modifiable risk factors of breast cancer
  • Effectively discuss the rationale for the current breast cancer screening policy in BC with patients
  • Recognize and discuss some of the controversies surrounding breast cancer screening in BC with patients
