Course Overview :
The breast educational session is an overview of modern breast radiation recommendations for both early and locally advanced breast cancer. The session starts with an overview of early breast cancer management and treatment and highlights recent high impact journal articles to support current practice. The early breast cancer section includes a discussion of standard whole breast RT, hypofractionated whole breast RT & APBI. Indications, techniques, and planning tips are covered. A discussion of locally advanced breast cancer follows. For the purposes of this educational session “locally advanced” includes all patients for which radiation treatment of the regional lymphatics would be recommended. This also includes an overview of management and treatment highlighting high impact journal articles to support treatment. Recent changes in axillary management with surgery and the impact of this on regional nodal radiation are covered. Practical radiation planning techniques and tips are covered (use of atlas, IMRT, protons).

Learning Objectives :
• Demonstrate how volumetric imaging impacts plan quality and potential treatment outcomes in HDR brachytherapy.
• Define the effect of tissue heterogeneity in dose calculation and learn model-based dose calculation methods (e.g. Collapsed-Cone, Grid-based Boltzmann Solve).
• Discuss the potential benefit of custom designed applicators and personalized implantation of interstitial catheters in volumetric brachytherapy.
