Bladder Cancer in Young Women: Unique Challenges and Fertility Preservation

Bladder cancer in women under the age of 50 represents a rare yet critically underrecognized clinical challenge. When it does occur, it is often misdiagnosed or diagnosed late, leading to advanced-stage presentation and a higher risk of biologically aggressive tumors. Traditional clinical suspicion for hematuria or recurrent urinary tract symptoms is low in younger female patients, resulting in diagnostic delays and suboptimal early intervention.

This CME/CE course is designed to raise awareness of the unique clinical and psychosocial needs associated with bladder cancer in premenopausal women. Participants will learn to recognize anatomical, immunologic, and molecular distinctions that may contribute to disease presentation and progression in younger patients. Diagnostic disparities—such as misattributing hematuria to benign gynecologic or urinary causes—are also discussed to improve early detection.

The course emphasizes fertility preservation, which is often overlooked in oncology care but is essential for women of reproductive age facing cytotoxic treatments. Attendees will explore fertility-sparing counseling, the timing of referrals to reproductive specialists, and available options like oocyte/embryo cryopreservation, ovarian transposition, ovarian shielding during radiation, and uterine-sparing surgical techniques.

In addition to clinical management, the course highlights the psychosocial burden of a cancer diagnosis at a reproductive stage of life. It equips healthcare professionals to integrate patient values, reproductive goals, and survivorship planning into a holistic care strategy. Learners will be better prepared to tailor treatment plans that balance oncologic control with fertility preservation and quality-of-life outcomes.
