OVERVIEW

Are You Distressed? The Importance of Moral Distress is organized by Dietitians of Canada (DC) / Les Dietetistes du Canada.

Description:
The COVID-19 pandemic has placed enormous burdens on health care professionals, including dietitians. This burden has resulted in high levels of moral distress, which occurs when an individual feels that what they are asked to do is not ethical or doesnt align with their morals, or when they know the ethical action to take but a different action is taken. This session will focus on moral distress, moral residue, and the crescendo effect. Dietitians will be introduced to the causes and effects of moral distress and learn how to cope with moral distress.

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the basic ethical principles that are the basis for bioethics
  • Define moral distress, moral residue, and the crescendo effect and recognize the signs of these in themselves and others
  • Examine the causes and effects of moral distress in dietetic practice
  • Develop healthy ways of coping with moral distress
