Description:
The incidence of venous thromboembolic (VTE) development in patients with cancer has been reported as much as four to seven-fold higher than that for non-cancer patients. Anticoagulation management remains challenging for these patients, due to the higher risk of recurrent VTE (despite anticoagulant therapy) and bleeding complications, compared to patients without cancer. This application-based continuing pharmacy education activity will provide a 'journal club format' discussion for pharmacists and student pharmacists to analyze the long-awaited results of the Caravaggio Trial. Join us for a dynamic discussion reviewing the outcomes and implications of this trial, in light of the current data supporting the use of warfarin, low molecular weight heparins, and direct oral anticoagulants for the treatment of venous thromboembolic in patients with cancer.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this application-based course, participants should be able to:
• Identify risk factors for venous thromboembolic (VTE) in patients with cancer
• Discuss the evidence behind guideline recommendations supporting the use of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in the treatment of VTE
• Explain the efficacy and safety results of apixaban in the treatment of VTE in patients with cancer, as reported in the Caravaggio Trial
• Critique the results of the Caravaggio Trial in light of the current body of literature pertaining to the use of DOACs in the treatment of VTE in patients with cancer
• Apply the knowledge gained to create a VTE treatment and monitoring plan for the patient with cancer
