Activity Overview:
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neuromuscular disorder characterized by progressive muscle wasting as well as mobility impairment in varying degrees of severity, which is accompanied by high direct and indirect costs. Historically, the management of these patients was challenging and focused on supportive care, but recently developed disease-modifying therapies have the potential to revolutionize the lives of these patients. It is important for pharmacists to understand the role of these new therapies and understand cost-effectiveness analyses to ensure the appropriate management of these patients. This discussion will feature a panel of physicians and pharmacists who provide insight on key clinical and managed care considerations.

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
• Examine the etiology, subtypes, and quality-of-life burden of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)
• Differentiate among existing and investigational therapies for SMA
• Apply treatment strategies for managing population health and the costs of rare diseases
• Determine a comprehensive range of factors that are necessary to discuss and consider when making formulary decisions about SMA
