Course Overview:
This lecture reviews the history and pharmacology of alcohol, the scope of alcohol use and related-problems, acute effects on the brain and behavior, pathophysiology of alcohol misuse.

Learning Objectives:
After viewing this lecture participant should be able to
• DSM 5 definition of alcohol use disorders
• Epidemiology of alcohol use disorders, genetic and cultural predictors of alcoholism and of treatment response, metabolism and measures of blood alcohol content in men and women.
• Pharmacologic interventions for alcohol use disorders and evidence base. Include something about which patients do well with anti-depressants.
• Mechanisms of alcohol-drug interactions (list common meds that interact).
• Alcohol in the workplace, pertaining to absenteeism, injury at work, an effect on healthcare utilization.
• Clinical management of intoxication, withdrawal, detox.
• Medical sequelae as well as an impact on other chronic medical conditions (ie hep C, diabetes, heart disease) and impact on psychiatric conditions.
