Session description:
This session will provide an overview of the burden of SSI as a postoperative complication and review how SSI is defined by various bodies such as the CDC and ACS-NSQIP. It will also discuss the value of registries such as ACS-NSQIP in evaluating SSI rates to determine the need for quality improvement in this arena. The importance of reviewing the entire peri-operative period to identify issues that increase SSI risk will be emphasized. In addition, the utility of implementing bundled improvements, along with continuous monitoring and feedback, to maintain changes will also be reviewed.

At the end of the session, the participants should be able to:
• Review the definition(s) of SSI
• Discuss the use of the American College of Surgeons - National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS-NSQIP) to evaluate SSI data
• Review guidelines and best practices for SSI reduction
