Description:
The purpose of the course is to better understand skill vs will. Often, children who grow up with adverse experiences face unrealistic expectations. This course will explore how the brain develops in relation to adverse experience and provide tools to help understand how to best encourage and support children who have experienced neglect or abuse. Tips will also be given to best support caregivers and professionals who work with children who often are resistive to therapeutic interaction due to lack of trust and felt safety. Attainment of common goals such as sleep, nutrition, overactivity, and avoidance will be discussed. (Intermediate Level)

Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify ways brain development is changed by adverse experiences.
  2. Find simple tricks and techniques that help with common goals such as sleep, nutrition, overactivity, and avoidance.
  3. Better understand how to know if a child is unable vs. unwilling to participate in an activity.
  4. Understand the way the brain is shaped by experience and how to introduce new experiences for optimal brain redevelopment.
