Just two years ago, I talked with an Optometrist and we were discussing misalignment of eyes, nystagmus and high and low tone of the extraocular eye muscles. He stated he did not realize there was a treatment for nystagmus, had not thought of the eye muscles in relation to muscle tone and was very interested.
This course will assist therapists to work with children with nystagmus, eye alignment and focus problems with minimal equipment. You will learn simple skills to teach the program to caregivers for daily practice. This course will improve visual skills to children necessary in activities of daily living as well as writing, reading and depth perception.
If the child is started early in rehab, the parents and therapists can realign vision to improve to 3-D and functional vision and may avoid the need for glasses. Coordination, reading and safety are all dependent on visual skills. Vision is a preparatory skill which improves performance of occupation and tasks. Vision is used in neuroplasticity as a useful tool, since it connects to 80% of the CNS. Application of neuroplasticity techniques during treatment sessions are utilized to enhance visual and motor function during play, education and negotiation of their environment. Evaluation and treatment information will be explained to the attendees. Visual alignment may also be a cause of misalignment of head, neck and trunk. Identification of the causal factors in poor visual ability will lead the therapist to effective treatments and resolution of the challenges.
