This course introduces participants to the world of orofacial myology (aka oral myofunctional therapy) and explains the importance of providing treatment in a sequential, systematic and sensible manner.  It covers the 4 frequently overlooked barriers that must be addressed to maximize the opportunity for successful treatment of “tongue thrust,” articulation, swallowing, drooling, and many more conditions. Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Summarize how to provide to clients and referral sources an easily understood definition of orofacial myology
  2. Describe how to administer a screening assessment for orofacial myological symptoms and disorders
  3. Name and describe the barriers that inhibit treatment progress for certain speech and phase one swallowing disorders
  4. List the effects of lip, tongue, and mandible resting postures as they relate to precise speech production and feeding development.
  5. Identify the Quick Tongue Tie screening assessment tool to determine if deeper examination is necessary for lingual frena restriction.
