Description:
This course is for the clinician who is new to treating concussion and would like to learn more about the evaluation and management of concussion patients. A background in vestibular rehabilitation is helpful, but not required. The class will review the basic pathophysiology of concussion, newly published APTA guidelines on evaluating concussion, and evidence-based tools for assessment of concussion. Additionally, treatment techniques for the deficits found with concussion will be described in detail to give the clinician the tools they need to begin treating concussion patients. The variable nature of symptoms and tolerance to treatment interventions will be emphasized as this is one of the most challenging areas when treating concussion patients. Course instruction methods include lecture, demonstration, videos, case studies and question/answers. (Introductory Level)

Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Understand and describe the pathophysiology of concussion at the cellular and macroscopic level.
  2. Be able to evaluate post -concussion patients according to recent APTA clinical practice guidelines.
  3. Identify how to implement a treatment plan for the concussion patient based on assessment and current best clinical evidence.
  4. List specific treatment interventions for major problems commonly found in the post-concussion patient.
  5. Utilize a multidisciplinary approach in treating concussion patients by appropriately referring to other health care practitioners including audiologists, speech pathologists, psychiatry and social work, neurologists and neuro-ophthalmologists or other vision specialists.
  6. Be able to educate post-concussion patients and families on the nature of concussion, self-management techniques, and rationales for treatment.

This is a 3-contact hour course equivalent to 3 CEU’s or 0.3 CEUs offered as a live webinar or self-study.
