#7319 Engaging in PLAY (Play and Language for Autistic Youngsters); Intense, Comprehensive Treatment for Children with Autism

Summary: The purpose of this course is to learn about an intervention program that is developmental, individualized, and relationship based for working with children and families. PLAY (Play and Language for Autistic Youngsters) and it’s principles are utilized to create comprehensive playful exchanges in relation to the child’s functional development, to support fun interactions with others. Even though PLAY project was developed for children with autism, the developmental levels and practical strategies are relevant for all young children, particularly for those difficult to engage. Attendees will learn techniques to apply immediately when designing intervention plans for children on their current caseload. The overall goal for this course is to understand how to respect and utilize a child with autism’s unique profile to enhance their communication through joyful interactions. Course instruction methods include lecture, demonstration, videos, case studies and question/answers.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

Identify the aspects of a child’s individual profile.
List the 4 principles of the PLAY project.
Recognize evidence-based strategies for working with children with autism.

#7318 Types of Play that Build Learning Connections

Summary: For children, play is learning, especially when the play is structured to engage and connect them to meaningful thought. This course will explore various types of play and activities to elicit learning. No toy bag…. no problem. The instructor, an experienced play therapist, will share ideas for finding the best toy for the child you’re working with. Learn evidence-based strategies to engage in different types of play, including food play for picky eaters. Topics will also include outdoor play, sensory play, and music play. Learn some new ways to make toys from household items. You will also learn strategies for transitions in-between activities to keep children engaged. Course instruction methods include lecture, demonstration, videos, case studies and question/answers.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

Name 3 activities to engage children using different types of play.
Identify different types of play that help build learning for outdoor play, music and social skills.
List several strategies to use during transitions to keep the child engaged.

Format: This is a 3 contact hour course equivalent to 3 CEU’s or 0.3 CEUs offered as a live webinar or self-study. For Live courses, the content is presented via an internet website displaying real time power points. Learners will receive a course instruction link. Instructors lecture through livestreaming internet on your computer. Questions may be asked during the webinar using the chat feature or the “raise hand” feature for live discussion.
