This module will teach the learner breastfeeding benefits, procedures, and physiology.

Objectives:
Breastfeeding History
• Describe a normal newborn breast feeding pattern
• List 2 ways to determine adequacy of feedings
• Describe 3 post-partum breastfeeding supportive practices

Physiology of Lactation
• Identify components of functional breast anatomy
• Identify components of supportive breast anatomy
• State how the anatomy of the breast influences the physiology of lactation

Cue Based Feeding
• Identify hunger cues
• Describe the timing of infant cues related to feeding readiness
• Distinguish cue based feeding from scheduled feeding
• List signs that indicate satiety

Expressed Breast Milk
• Discuss Benefits of Hand Expression
• Compare Hand Expression versus Electric Pump Expression
• Describe Common Mistakes in Hand Expression

Contraindications to Breast Feeding
• Describe Infectious Contraindications to Breast Feeding
• List Therapy Related Contraindications to Breast Feeding
• Identify Other Contraindications to Breast Feeding
