Description:
This course is a compilation of peer-reviewed abstracts presented during the 2019 Southern Region Burn Conference, prepared by interprofessional members of the healthcare team who treat burn patients, describing work currently being conducted in burn centers in the Southern Region. The presentations showcase research, case studies, discovery, new innovative techniques/procedures, best practices, and other relevant topics of interest to achieve optional patient outcomes in burn patients.

Presentations and Objectives:
Application of a Histological Determination System to Evaluate Burn Assessment Accuracy,
Ronald D. Baxter, MD, PGY-4, Wake Forest Baptist Health Burn Center, Winston-Salem, NC
Objectives:
• Discuss the visual diagnosis of initial burn wound healing potential continues to challenge even burn care experts;
• Demonstrate heterogeneity in burn healing potential further complicates the challenge of burn healing potential assessment;
• Recognize techniques that can supplement visual burn assessment continue to be necessary to improve burn wound assessment.

Retrospective Review of UF Health Burn Center Readmissions,

Objective:
• Describe a retrospective chart review project investigating hospital readmissions to the Burn Service at UF Health Shands hospital within 30 days of discharge in order to identify patient factors that lead to readmission.

• Prevent inpatient burn wound infections through the use of daily wound care and allow demarcation prior to excision and grafting.

Heparin Induced Fever: A Case Report and Literature Review,

• Discuss drug induced fevers;
• Identify common symptoms and lab value trends associated with drug induced fevers;
• Recognize the potential for drug induced fevers in burn care.

Population-based One-year Mortality for Stevens-Johnson/Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Spectrum Disorders is Greater at Burn Facilities than Other Facilities in New York: Expected Based on Treated Disease Severity or Sobering Wake-up Call?,

• Discuss the prodrome symptoms and associated inducing conditions or iatrogenic causes of SJS/TENS spectrum disorders, and correct identification of these disorders;
• Discuss the current population-based evidence of risk factors for mortality following onset of SJS/TENS disorders.
