OVERVIEW

Blood transfusions are an essential component of modern medical care, commonly administered in surgical, trauma, oncology, and chronic illness settings. However, despite being lifesaving, blood transfusion procedures are not without risks. This CE course for Registered Nurses (RNs) provides a comprehensive exploration of best practices for safe and effective administration of blood products. It emphasizes core concepts such as patient identification, compatibility testing, transfusion reaction management, and post-transfusion care, preparing nurses to execute each stage of the transfusion process confidently.

The course begins by establishing a foundational understanding of blood transfusion principles, including the rationale for transfusions, blood typing, crossmatching, and the proper use of red blood cells, platelets, plasma, and cryoprecipitate. Participants will learn how to mitigate risks by understanding compatibility requirements and storage protocols that preserve product efficacy and reduce the chances of contamination.

Pre-transfusion protocols are a focal point of the curriculum. Nurses will be trained in essential steps such as double-checking patient identifiers, verifying blood components against the prescription, and understanding the use of vascular access devices, filtration systems, and documentation protocols. Proper preparation sets the tone for safe administration and can drastically reduce the risk of transfusion errors.

This course teaches nurses to recognize the signs of reactions such as febrile non-hemolytic transfusion reactions, transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI), and hemolytic reactions.
