Overview:
While electronic medicine offers a myriad of benefits for improving health care access and quality while freeing up more of your time for direct patient care, these benefits also create new liability risks that you need to understand and look out for. Above all, it’s important to not be lulled into a false sense of security that the technology is infallible. As fast and accurate as electronic data processing may be, it still relies on humans to enter the data, and human error is inevitable. And, as we’ll see, once human error enters the system, it tends to get passed on or replicated until another human notice and corrects it. Too often, that only happens after the patient has been injured. And it’s not the electronic devices that get sued as a result.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, a physician should be able to:
• Describe the liability risks that are reduced by electronic health record (EHR) systems, as well as the new risks they create.
• Explain how telemedicine communications can unwittingly give rise to physician-patient • communication.
• Describe appropriate and inappropriate approaches to Internet prescribing.
• Explain the liability risks and benefits of consultations via videoconferencing.
