OVERVIEW

Controlled substance prescribing is a critical aspect of modern nursing practice, requiring deep knowledge of pharmacological classifications, legal guidelines, and patient safety measures. This 3-hour CE course is tailored for Registered Nurses (RNs) to ensure responsible, ethical, and legally compliant prescribing of controlled substances. Nurses will learn how to classify and differentiate controlled substances under federal and state laws, assess patient risk, and implement best practices for prescribing and monitoring controlled substances.

The course also equips participants with tools to recognize signs of misuse, dependence, and addiction and take appropriate, compassionate action. Emphasis is placed on utilizing Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) to track prescribing patterns and prevent abuse. Ethical considerations, including managing patient autonomy, privacy, and professional responsibility, are explored through real-world scenarios. This course is essential for nurses in Massachusetts, Mississippi, Utah, Vermont, Wyoming, Florida, Minnesota, South Carolina, Virginia, Wisconsin, Illinois, and North Carolina, as it fulfills mandatory CE requirements for controlled substance prescribing.
