Mental Health Special: Care of American Veterans, Depression, PTSD, Suicide is organized by ATrain Education, Inc..
Expiration Date: May 1, 2027
Course Summary:
The very nature of a complex healthcare system makes workers vulnerable to stress, trauma, depression, and, at times, mental health issues. Healthcare providers serve patients and families who are experiencing difficult realities—especially during a pandemic.
The course begins with a discussion of mental health issues common to Veterans and their families, including post-traumatic stress disorder, suicide risk, depression, grief, substance abuse, and intimate partner violence.
The next section offers a thorough explanation of depression, focusing on how it differs for men and women. We continue with an overview of PTSD, which describes symptoms, diagnostic criteria, and treatment options. We conclude with an in-depth coverage of suicide in America, which covers risk factors, screening and assessment, lethal means, and the importance of community support.
Course Objectives:
When you finish this course you will be able to:
• Discuss post-traumatic stress disorder, suicide risk, depression, grief, substance abuse, and intimate partner violence and explain how each may arise in military veterans and their families.
• Discuss the nature of depression and how it manifests differently in men and women.
• Define post-traumatic stress disorder and discuss its implications for the family and community.
