OVERVIEW

This continuing education (CE) course for Registered Nurses (RNs) provides an in-depth and evidence-based approach to managing the wide range of side effects associated with cancer treatments. With cancer therapies becoming increasingly complex and targeted, the potential for both acute and chronic treatment-related toxicities has grown significantly. Nurses play a critical role in the early identification, prevention, and management of these complications, directly impacting patient safety, treatment adherence, and quality of life.

The course covers oncologic emergencies such as febrile neutropenia, hypercalcemia of malignancy, tumor lysis syndrome, and superior vena cava syndrome. It also explores management techniques for chemotherapy-induced toxicities, including nausea, vomiting, mucositis, and hematologic toxicities. Emphasis is placed on individualized nursing care plans, pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities, and evidence-based interventions to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Participants will learn to apply risk assessments, implement early warning protocols, and collaborate within interdisciplinary teams to manage side effects. The course also delves into palliative care strategies, symptom control, patient and caregiver education, and documentation practices. Real-world case studies and clinical scenarios help contextualize learning.

This CE activity supports the professional development of oncology nurses and those in general practice who provide care to patients undergoing cancer treatment, strengthening their competence in dealing with the unique challenges of oncology nursing.

Educational Objectives

  • Explain the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and management strategies for common cancer-related complications, including febrile neutropenia, hypercalcemia of malignancy, and tumor lysis syndrome.
  • Evaluate risk factors and preventive measures for chemotherapy-induced toxicities, such as nausea, vomiting, and mucositis.
  • Analyze pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies for managing oncologic emergencies, including superior vena cava syndrome and spinal cord compression.
  • Apply evidence-based guidelines to optimize supportive care and symptom control in cancer patients.
  • Identify nursing interventions for severe complications such as hemorrhagic cystitis and brain metastases.

  • Tumor lysis syndrome is most commonly associated with hematologic malignancies and has a mortality rate of up to 20% without timely intervention (Howard et al., 2011).
  • Mucositis affects up to 80% of patients undergoing high-dose chemotherapy or radiation therapy to the head and neck (Sonis, 2004).
  • Evidence-based supportive care has been shown to significantly reduce hospitalization rates in cancer patients (NCCN Guidelines, 2023).
  • Early identification of hypercalcemia of malignancy can prevent severe neurological complications and improve outcomes (Ralston et al., 2010).
