OVERVIEW

Gender Identity and Respectfulness in the Medical Practice is organized by Maine Medical Association, Center for Quality Improvement (MMA-CQI).

Original Launch: September 1, 2023
Renewed: July 1, 2026
Expires: June 30, 2029

Description:
This learning module will focus on teaching attendees the skills they need to be respectful of gender identity in the medical practice, which both improves patient experience and patient health outcomes. While transgender people have always existed, it is more recent that many trans people have been able to be out and access medical care as themselves. Because of this, many healthcare staff are unsure of how to navigate gender identity and respectfulness in medical practice. This module will give attendees the knowledge and skills to navigate this with confidence.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this module, participants will better understand how to treat transgender patients with respect through:

  • an increased knowledge of gender identity
  • improved skills in working and communicating with transgender people
  • a better understanding their role in improving health outcomes for transgender patients

Table of Contents:  The units will consist of the following:

  • Pre-assessment
  • Unit 1 Gender 101
  • Unit 2 Case studies
  • Unit 3 Patient-centered strategies
