Course Description:
This course provides counselors a general overview of what is known about the nervous system, the disorders of the brain, and some of the exciting avenues of research that promise new therapies for many neurological diseases. This course reviews psychiatric disorders such as anxiety disorders, Tourette syndrome, major depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. This will assist mental health professional in supporting clients who are coping with disorders that are impacted by the mechanisms in the brain and the nervous system.
Learning Objectives:
• Explain the basics of the brain, nervous system, neuron, and neurotransmitters
• Explain the general principles that underlie the developmental process of the brain
• Explain the mechanisms in the brain and nervous system that impact sensation and perception, learning, memory, language, movement, sleep, stress, and aging
• Analyze various diseases and disorders associated with the functioning of the brain and nervous system
