Clinical Supervision and Professional Development of the Substance Abuse Counselor is organized by ACTS Consulting, Inc. This Text based course has been approved for a maximum of 30 Contact Hours.

Course Description:
Clinical supervision is emerging as the crucible in which counselors acquire knowledge and skills for the substance abuse treatment profession, providing a bridge between the classroom and the clinic. Supervision is necessary in the substance abuse treatment field to improve client care, develop the professionalism of clinical personnel, and impart and maintain ethical standards in the field. In recent years, especially in the substance abuse field, clinical supervision has become the cornerstone of quality improvement and assurance. (SAMHSA, 2009).

This course is designed using the text “Clinical Supervision and Professional Development of the Substance Abuse Counselor (TIP 52).” The course includes four chapters, each based on the four chapters from the text. Each course chapter includes a reading assignment, discussion questions, and a chapter examination.

Objectives:
• Evaluate the teaching, coaching, consulting, and mentoring functions of clinical supervisors and determine how effective supervision leads to a high quality of clinical care.
• Describe various models, methods, and techniques of clinical supervision, developmental stages of counselors and supervisors, and cultural, contextual, ethical, and legal issues that affect supervisory relationships.
• Review specific examples of clinical supervision strategies while recognizing skills that supervisors need as part of their clinical, supportive, evaluative, and administrative roles.
• Identify key issues for administrators as they implement a clinical supervision program including organizational readiness and supervision guidelines.
• Complete Application to Practice Discussions for each chapter
