OVERVIEW

This CE course for Registered Nurses (RNs) focuses on the safe and effective administration and monitoring of anticoagulant medications in clinical practice. Anticoagulants play a critical role in the prevention and treatment of thrombotic disorders, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), stroke, and myocardial infarction. Given the high-risk nature of these medications, nurses need to understand the pathophysiology of thrombogenesis, the pharmacology of anticoagulants, and the nursing responsibilities associated with their use.

The course begins with an exploration of thrombogenesis, the role of atherosclerosis, and how plaque rupture can lead to the formation of thrombi. Nurses will gain insights into how thrombi can evolve into emboli and the resulting systemic and pulmonary complications. Building on this foundation, the course provides an in-depth examination of commonly used anticoagulants such as heparin, warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, and thrombolytics like alteplase and streptokinase.

Through practical case scenarios, nurses will learn to select appropriate therapy based on clinical presentation and patient risk profiles. Emphasis is placed on understanding medication mechanisms, monitoring therapeutic levels through PT/INR and aPTT, recognizing signs of complications, and making informed dosage adjustments. The course also addresses the unique challenges of managing patients with co-morbidities or on multiple medications.

Participants will be guided through essential nursing considerations, including patient education, dietary management (especially for warfarin users), and self-administration techniques for low molecular weight heparins like enoxaparin. Best practices in lifestyle counseling, adherence promotion, and interdisciplinary coordination will also be covered.

By the end of the course, RNs will be empowered to implement comprehensive management strategies to ensure optimal therapeutic outcomes and patient safety in anticoagulation therapy.
