Statement of Need:
Systemic mastocytosis (SM) is a rare mast cell disease associated with a significant symptom burden, including anaphylaxis and cutaneous, gastrointestinal, neuropsychiatric, and musculoskeletal symptoms. Due to its wide spectrum of clinical features, treatment for SM is personalized based on disease subtype and symptom burden. Treatment outcomes have improved significantly with the introduction of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) for SM, with several agents approved (Lee et al, 2023). It is vital for members of the interdisciplinary care team to remain up to date on novel treatment options, supportive care interventions for reducing treatment burden, and strategies for personalizing management plans in order to optimize quality of life and improve outcomes for their patients. In Module 2 of this podcast, Dr. Mariana Castells, Director of the Drug Hypersensitivity and Desensitization Center and Director of the Mastocytosis Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, will explore strategies for developing personalized management plans for patients with SM.

Learning Objective:
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to

Recognize the diverse clinical manifestations of SM for prompt diagnosis and treatment initiation
Assess the clinical evidence for novel therapies in SM, evaluating their potential to improve patient outcomes
Develop personalized treatment plans, integrating expert strategies on treatment selection and adverse event management

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 0.5 Medical Knowledge MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.
