OVERVIEW

Imaging Strategies for Pediatric Patients With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Podcast) is organized by eRADIMAGING.

Release Date: 07/10/2023
Expiration Date: 08/01/2029

Course Description:
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects about 1 in 36 children in the United States today. The likelihood of emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and the need for medical imaging is statistically higher in patients with ASD due to comorbidities and other issues related to the disorder. Regardless of the type of imaging facility or department that radiologic technologists (RTs) work in, there is a high probability they will encounter and need to work with a patient with ASD during their career. Therefore, it is important for RTs to understand pediatric patients with ASD, the depth and breadth of the symptoms of ASD, and how best to work with this population and their parents/guardians in order to provide the highest level of care. This Continuing Education (CE) podcast explains ASD, outlines the signs and symptoms of the disorder and explores triggers for pediatric patients with ASD in a healthcare facility. Methods and strategies to minimize trauma and stress for the patient, their caregivers, and staff will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives:
After listening to this podcast, the participant should be able to:

  • EXPLAIN autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
  • DISCUSS signs, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of ASD and associated behavioral health conditions as they relate to medical imaging.
  • IDENTIFY general healthcare and medical imaging challenges faced by pediatric patients with ASD.
  • OUTLINE strategies medical imaging professionals can use when working with pediatric patients with ASD.
