OVERVIEW

The Value of Charge Diversity is organized by Gawenda Seminars & Consulting, Inc. and will be held on Oct 28, 2026.

Description:
Data from multiple outpatient therapy practices have identified patterns of charge use that indicate that therapists don’t effectively utilize codes that describe the care being provided and the direct contact time being spent. A common pattern is to lump multiple activities into therapeutic exercise. There is also a common misunderstanding regarding the Medicare rules for charging for time-based codes and the CPT description of time (commonly termed the midpoint rule or substantial portion methodology). In this session, we will discuss what the data shows, how that data may impact both revenue and your data picture captured by payers. In addition, we will discuss how correct coding and capturing the diversity of treatments being performed with patients impact the perception of medical necessity. You will leave this session with a plan for evaluating your own data and an educational plan to ensure that therapists understand the difference between commonly used code and the difference in the Medicare billing rule and the Midpoint rule. This knowledge and implementation of an education plan can impact revenue and reduce denials in the event of an audit.

Objectives:
At the conclusion of this online course presentation, participants will:

  • Identify the data needed to determine what the current charging pattern is for your business.
  • Articulate the common errors in using time-based codes.
  • Articulate the difference in Medicare billing rules vs Midpoint rules.
  • Identify opportunities that improving charge diversity will bring to your business.
