Description:
A two-day programme designed to develop awareness, skills and knowledge for the delivery of a coordinated sexual health service. Will appeal to practice nurses, youth workers and other health and social care workers involved in sexual health.
Course Content:
Sex and Sexuality:
Social influences on sexual development How attitudes and values may affect practice Communicating effectively and with confidence about sexual health and related issues Identify, assess and use relevant resources for sex and relationships education Understand what is meant by the ‘No rush’ ‘No regrets’ (Delay) approach and to be able to distinguish it from the ‘abstinence’ approach Understand young people’s issue around the use of condoms Know what key messages to give young people about condoms and their use The law as it applies to sex, young people and vulnerable adults
Relationships and negotiation:
Understanding of sex and relationship education including, statutory and nonstatutory guidance Consider what makes an effective sex and relationship education programme Experience a variety of teaching strategies and examined their values in developing young people’s knowledge, attitudes and skills
Sexually Transmitted Infections and safer sex:
Common sexually transmitted infections – their signs, symptoms, transmission and treatment Current issues in HIV and AIDS The relevance of sexually transmitted infections within sexual health promotion work Identify barriers to service access Strategies to prevent occurrences of sexually transmitted infections Discuss attitudes towards sexually transmitted infections
Contraception and pregnancy:
Understanding of current contraceptive methods The factors that influence contraceptive choices and resources required to support practice Communicating about contraceptive choices in a supportive, non-judgemental way Discuss the legal framework around abortion and the services provided by the different services providers Understand the different methods of abortion and current statistics and appreciate the different religious, moral and cultural values and attitudes to abortion Teenage pregnancy Be more able to discuss abortion with young people using a variety of techniques and resources.
