This webinar, designed by The Trust, is primarily aimed at psychologists and psychology students, but may also be useful to other related behavioral health practitioners. Credit will not be awarded for partial attendance, so please do not make other appointments or obligations that interfere with this webinar.
Psychologists routinely encounter complex, high-stakes situations that require sound clinical judgment, ethical decision-making, and proactive risk management. This intermediate workshop provides a deep dive into five of the most legally and ethically challenging areas of practice:
- compassionate and competent treatment of suicidal patients while balancing clinical and liability concerns;
- navigating the complexities of duty to protect obligations;
- working effectively with high-conflict families;
- managing subpoenas and courtroom testimony; and
- ensuring a legally and ethically sound termination of treatment.
This day-long workshop will provide actionable strategies to mitigate risk, protect clients and practice, and enhance confidence in addressing these critical issues. This seminar is a key training for psychologists and other mental health professionals seeking to strengthen their ethical competence and safeguard their professional integrity in today’s increasingly complex clinical landscape.

Course Objectives:
Objective 1
Describe five principles that can assist in improving ethical, clinical and risk management judgments and decision-making.
Objective 2
List three erroneous myths regarding patients/clients who become suicidal.
Objective 3
Name three clinical and risk management steps to address imminent suicidality.
Objective 4
Define three elements of meeting standards of care related to the duty to protect.
Objective 5
Identify four dimensions of responding effectively to subpoenas for testimony and records.
Objective 6
Summarize four essential ethical and risk-management steps in clinician-initiated endings of care.
