Description:
This one-day symposium for pediatricians, family physicians and other healthcare providers will showcase the latest approaches, updates and research related to several common patient issues confronted by primary care providers as well as newer and more complex diseases. Our speakers will address health concerns, share cases, and offer guidelines on how to manage the patient. We are excited to present lectures on eating disorders, management of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, anemia & bleeding, firearm injury prevention, supporting and managing our gender diverse youth and impact of early childhood exprerinces on development. 

Learning Objectives:
• Examine medical and psychological presentations of eating disorders and explore common
• co-occurring diagnoses
• Identify practical strategies for working with those with eating disorders
• ?Describe the management and follow-up of iron deficiency anemia
• Explain which child deserves a bleeding disorder work-up
• Describe the epidemiology of youth firearm injury in the United States and identify strategies to incorporate youth firearm injury prevention into your practice
• Apply the public health approach to youth firearm injury prevention
• Describe the developmental processes of gender identity development among transgender and gender-diverse youth
• Explain current research findings on autism, depression, anxiety, ADHD and gender diversity
• Describe the importance of family acceptance in shaping mental health outcomes for youth
• Assess pubertal status of all youth and provide guidance and appropriate referral for pubertal suppression
• Manage oral and injectable hormonal medications for menstrual suppression
• Describe up-to-date recommendations for newborn jaundice including phototherapy and discharge follow-up parameters
• Demonstrate use of the Kaiser calculator for chorioamnionitis to establish risk factors for sepsis in newly delivered infants
• Describe best practices for bronchiolitis including the appropriate use of monitoring, fluids and adjunctive medical therapy
• Discuss risk and protective factors associated with social media use for teens
• Review approaches to discussing social media with teen patients and families in the clinical setting
• Identify resources to support youth and families in navigating social media use
• Discuss the relationship between child development and grief experiences
• Develop bereavement support skills
• Identify resources that therapeutically address grief and loss with the pediatric population
