Decision-Making Capacity Assessment (DMCA) Workshop Level 1

Decision-Making Capacity Assessment (DMCA) Workshop Level 1 is organized by University of Calgary Office of Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development (CME & PD) and will be held on Oct 02, 2025.

Course Overview:
There are complex and predictable clinical, ethical and legal implications when assessing decision-making capacity. These workshops will help the primary care provider navigate the process related to the Alberta Adult Guardianship & Trusteeship, Personal Directives and Enduring Power of Attorney Acts.

Two series workshops are offered (only once), and participants have a choice of engaging in the Level 1 and/or the Level 2 workshop. Level 1 covers the basic information to assess decision-making capacity and the interdisciplinary approach. Level 2 provides a deeper dive into the application of the basic information on decision-making capacity assessment (DMCA).

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of DMCA Level 1, participants will be able to:

• Recall aspects of the Adult Guardianship and Trusteeship Act and Personal Directives Act
• Identify the guiding principles in decision-making capacity assessment (DMCA)
• Appraise the DMCA process
• Explore an interdisciplinary approach to Capacity Assessment
• Employ Capacity Assessment worksheets used in this process
• Integrate the above information in assessment of capacity through case examples
