Description:
This workshop addresses therapist responsibility to ensure patient welfare in all aspects of practice. Using film clips and real-life examples, Dr. Harmell will cover a wide range of topics, beginning with an introduction to relevant ethics and law and an overview of the current research and knowledge that inform ethical and legal practice. Participants will learn the four elements holding therapists accountable for their professional work and the “four bins” method of considering patient dilemmas, as well as the difference between confidentiality, privilege, and privacy. Dr. Harmell will also cover therapist counter-transference, self-care for therapists, and working with diverse populations, including the three pillars of clinical competency and the use of social justice in the therapy relationship. One hour of the presentation will be devoted to suicide prevention, detection, and assessment. Literature updates, along with Codes of Ethics references and current expert opinion, will be integrated in all areas of the discussion.
