Description:
There are now more patients who have Heart Failure with preserved Ejection Fraction (HFpEF) than those with reduced Ejection Fraction (HFrEF). Making the diagnosis of HFpEF is more challenging than HFrEF as many commonly used screening tools such as physical examination, echocardiography and measurement of natriuretic peptide levels are less sensitive and specific in this population. Most importantly, no therapies have yet been shown to improve major cardiovascular outcome (i.e. reductions in hospitalization rates or lower mortality). Several ongoing studies are evaluating novel treatments for this disorder.

Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this virtual conference, participants should be able to:
• Recognize patients with HFpEF and understand pitfalls of the diagnosis
• Describe the pathophysiology of HFpEF including characteristic hemodynamic alterations and the role of coexisting conditions (i.e., kidney, lung, metabolic, etc)
• Apply rational decisions for diagnostic testing in patients with suspected HFpEF
• Discuss currently available therapies for HFpEF
• Identify potential new drug, device, and other therapies for HFpEF and know how to select patients
• Improve ability to practice “precision”, patient-centered medicine for patients with HFpEF
• Refer patients for ongoing clinical trials of novel HFpEF therapies
