Description
Learn Serve Lead 2020: The AAMC Annual Meeting will be a virtual offering with the option to take part in 35 different sessions. The three-day conference consists of three half-days of programming. If participants take part in a session at each time block November 16-18, they will have participated in 11 sessions. All will have the option to participate in recordings of the other 24 sessions following the meeting. The meeting attracts medical school deans, teaching hospital CEOs, medical school and teaching hospital faculty, researchers, administrators, residents and students.

At Learn Serve Lead 2020, our speakers will address the complicated crises our country and our world have experienced this year. We’ll delve into how COVID-19 has changed our medical schools and teaching hospitals, as well as how the pandemic has affected all of us individually on many levels. We’ll also dig deep into the long-standing racial injustices embedded in our society and our health care system and stimulate dialogue about ways we can combat systemic racism. We’ll discuss conscious and unconscious racial bias, overt discrimination, gender harassment, and inequities in academic medicine as we consider how to capitalize on the nation’s newfound momentum for change. Several sessions will be devoted to other pressing societal challenges both within and outside of medicine.

Needs Assessment/Practice Gaps:
The 35+ CME sessions at Learn Serve Lead cover a wide breath of topics, including scientific research, educational scholarship, leadership, competencies across the continuum of medical education, faculty practice, and health system change, as well as thought leader sessions designed to reach all of our constituents and bridge practice gaps and needs commonly encountered in the academic medical school environment.

Educational Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
• Create practical solutions for complex issues through collaboration.
• Assess the unprecedented disruption and transformation that has taken place in 2020 and how academic medicine, medical schools and teaching hospitals have been impacted.
• Evaluate how academic medicine—across mission areas—can prepare for future disruptions.
• Address the immediate challenges and opportunities in transitioning to a post-Covid world and consider how each of us will help resolve ongoing issues.
• Confront racial bias and inequality in society as well as within academia and health care.
• Apply new concepts and tools for leading innovation and cultural change in your organization.
• Make connections with colleagues that lead to relevant discussions and future interactions.
