Description:
The number of clients with a diagnosis of heart failure is increasing due to improved diagnostic capabilities, more treatment options and longer life expectancy. This course will focus on preparing the rehabilitation professional to examine and treat the client with heart failure in an evidence-based manner by providing an overview of the most recent revision of the Clinical Practice Guideline for Heart Failure from the American Physical Therapy Association. The course will provide information on diagnostics, prognosis, examination for stability and the most current evidence based recommendations for intervention that will optimize the client’s ability to perform ADLs, participate in socialization, and optimize functional outcomes.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Structure an examination of the client with heart failure with a focus on determining stability and readiness for physical activity.
  2. Understand objective measures that can be utilized to determine if intensity of therapeutic intervention is appropriate or needs to be adjusted.
  3. Summarize the key action statements of the most recent update of the American Physical Therapy (APTA) Clinical Practice Guideline for Heart Failure Rehabilitation.
  4. Understand how the best practice for clients with Heart Failure can optimize ability to perform ADLs, participate in social interaction, and self-care.
  5. Incorporate different, evidence based, activities to optimize outcomes with those with Heart Failure across the continuum of care
