OVERVIEW

#7428 Emergency Department Physical Therapy Practice: Identifying the Role is organized by MotivationsCEU and will be held on Sep 02, 2027.

Live Webinar Time:
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM EST

Description:
Today’s healthcare environment is oftentimes referred to as “Practicing in Silos”. Physical Therapists in the acute care setting are no strangers to this concept as they are asked to be very conscious of meeting organizational productivity standards while simultaneously being expected to provide prompt patient-centric quality of care and recommending safe, appropriate, and universally agreed-upon post-acute discharge needs. “Silo-type PT practice is seen most often in PT-owned or Corporate-owned PT Practices far away from the immediate influence of a referring physician, nurse case manager, facility liaisons, and insurance reps. However, Physical Therapists (PT’s) and Physical Therapist Assistants (PTA’s) roles in the Acute Care setting in general and in the Emergency Department (ED) in specific, are seemingly under the influence of those aforementioned entities. Considerable focus of this course will involve how physical therapy practice may act as a magnet, bringing together several independent medical and healthcare providers through professional collaboration.

Attend this new live webinar and learn how PT’s and PTA’s can offer value-based care options thus reflecting a ‘Top of Scope’ practice pattern within the ED. Review common questionnaires and evidenced-based assessment tools such as the HINTS exam, the Canadian C-spine Rule, Ottawa Knee Rules, and several other clinical practice guidelines (CPG’s) that will capture yellow and red flag pathology. Become reacquainted with the ICF as a biopsychosocial model when assessing your patients’ daily functioning that will determine how you establish treatment plans and goals as well as documenting and communicating your findings. Learn how a single “Nice catch” case can get you a ‘seat at the table’ with the decision-makers and stakeholders in the ED setting for the next level of care. Hear about several different case-scenarios where physical therapy assessment and intervention improved patient and provider satisfaction, reduced hospital spending, and increased throughput. Course instruction method includes: Lecture, Demonstration, Pictures/Graphs, Case Studies, and Question/Answer

Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Investigate patients’ current chief complaints and past medical histories using evidence-based questionnaires and deductive reasoning to determine appropriateness of a Physical Therapist consult in the ED
  2. Determine best practice for educating patients in performing ADL’s of dressing, eating, grooming, and personal hygiene while impaired in the emergency department (ED).
  3. Engage in clinical and social deductive reasoning when considering yellow and red flags reflective of worrisome pathology
  4. Utilize evidence-based assessments of neuromusculoskeletal systems to identify root causes for a patient’s symptoms
  5. Analyze and compare your findings with those of the MD/DO and their APP to support and strengthen professional collaboration
  6. Illustrate and defend clinical competence and expertise when ‘determining DC disposition’ and ‘evaluating for home safety’ while communicating with Nurse Case Managers
  7. Learning how to use personal self-reflection when asked to document your clinical findings into the legal electronic medical record (EMR) system
