Feigning Illness and Malingering in Psychiatric Practice: May 2025 is organized by Healio.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the distinctions between malingering, feigning illness, and deceptive reporting and the issues that complicate research and identification of feigning in clinical practice.
  2. Recognize the prevalence of and the behaviors commonly associated with malingering within psychiatric emergency settings, and the lack of indication for inpatient psychiatric admission in the management of malingering.
  3. Identify the challenges of measuring malingering in an inpatient setting, common motives for malingering, and the ethical considerations and best practices for detecting and addressing suspected malingering.
  4. Describe the assessment parameters of malingering within the children and adolescent population and how evaluation components differ from adults, and the complex motivations behind children’s feigned symptoms.
