OVERVIEW

AANA February 2020 Journal Course: Enterohepatic Recirculation: From Death by Mushroom to Perioperative Pharmacokinetics is organized by American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA). This Course has been approved for a maximum of Class A Credits: 1.

Course Launch Date: 2/17/20
Course Expires: 2/16/23

Description:
Enterohepatic recirculation (EHRC) is a multistage process with the following sequence: liver metabolism, bile secretion, gut metabolism, and reabsorption from the gut back to the systemic circulation.  Enterohepatic recirculation prolongs drug half-lives and may be associated with the generation of 1 or more secondary plasma peaks.  The clinical relevance of EHRC is discussed with its major implications for efficacy and safety.

Learning Outcomes:
• Identify normal hepatic function.
• Describe the process of EHRC.
• Describe the process of EHRC in pharmacokinetics.
• Critique the effect of EHRC on individual drugs.
• Differentiate between EHRC and biliary excretion.
