OVERVIEW

EMBO|EMBL Symposium - Biological Oscillators: Rhythms and Synchronisation Across Scales is organized by European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and will be held from Mar 24 - 27, 2026 at EMBL Advanced Training Centre (ATC), Heidelberg, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany.

Symposium Overview:
Exploring oscillatory phenomena in biological and natural systems across temporal and spatial scales, this symposium brings together diverse scientific communities to investigate shared principles of oscillations, rhythms, and synchronisation across molecular, organismal, ecological, and planetary contexts.

Topics include neuronal and cardiac dynamics, circadian and developmental rhythms, and oscillations in ecological and climate systems.

By bridging experimental and theoretical perspectives, the symposium aims to uncover common mechanisms underlying rhythmic behaviour and foster cross-disciplinary collaboration that connects molecular biology, physiology, ecology, and climate science.

Session Topics:

  • Oscillation mechanisms across different scales: from circadian clock to embryonic oscillators to biochemical oscillations
  • Mechanisms of rhythmic activity in excitable systems
  • Synchronisation of coupled oscillators
  • Ecological, planetary and climate rhythms and oscillations
  • Theoretical and cross-scale approaches to study oscillatory dynamics
  • Imaging approaches to study oscillatory dynamics
