Join our 15 day course Jan. 30th - Feb. 13th, 2028: Climb to the "Roof of Africa" with excellent instruction and the experience of Local African Mountain Guides. Kilimanjaro is without a doubt one of the world's great adventures. Climbing from Kilimanjaro's rainforests to its glacier capped 19,340 foot summit is simply an amazing experience. If that isn't exciting enough we will cap our adventures off with an African Safari. Watch herds of wildebeest traverse the serengeti, get up close with herds of elephants, watch zebras and giraffes run on the plain, and see some of the last remaining wild big cats stalk their prey. East Africa is one of the most amazing and enchanting places on earth to visit.

PREPARATION:  
The Summit's accessibility is one of the amazing characteristics of Kilimanjaro. There is no technical climbing involved in the ascent and any climber who is in good physical condition can reach the top without complicated skills and expensive climbing equipment. This is the only mountain of the seven summits, the tallest mountain on each of the seven continents, that is accessible to novice climbers with no high altitude experience and is a great prelude to climbing high mountains in the Himalayas or the Andes.

However, Kilimanjaro is an extreme high altitude climb that is demanding and everyone should be comfortable with basic hiking and mountain skills. In addition, clients should be comfortable climbing 4-8 hours a day with a backpack and expect a long 10 - 12 hour summit day. You must be in excellent physical shape and should begin training and preparation much in advance. Many underestimate the physical demands of altitude and climbing steep terrain for long hours.

HISTORY:
Himalaya Kilimanjaro is composed of three distinct volcanic cones: Kibo 5895 m (19,341 ft); Mawenzi 5149 m (16,893 ft); and Shira 3962 m (13,000 ft). Uhuru Peak is the highest summit on Kibo's crater rim. Kilimanjaro is a giant stratovolcano that began forming a million years ago, when lava spilled form the rift valley. Two of its three peaks, Mawenzi and Shira, are extinct while Kibo (the highest peak) is dormant. The last major eruption has been dated to 360,000 years ago. The first attempt to climb Kilimanjaro was made in 1861, by German military officer Baron Carl Claus von der Decken and the the young British geologist Richard Thornton. They only reached 8,200 ft before they were turned around. In 1887, another attempt to climb Kilimanjaro was made by, the German geology professor Hans Meyer who reached the base of Kibo, but was forced to turn back, not having the equipment necessary to handle the deep snow and ice which he encountered on the mountain. In 1889, Hans Meyer returned to Kili with the celebrated Austrian mountaineer Ludwig Purtscheller for his second attempt at the mountain and they completed the first ascent of Kibo on Oct. 6, 1889. Nobody would set foot on the summit of Kibo again for another 20 years. The highest summit of Mawenzi (5149 M0 was not climbed until July 29, 1912, by the German climbers Edward Oehler and Fritz Klute, who christened it Hans Meyer Peak, in Meyer's honor. Mount Kilimanjaro was declared a World's Heritage site by UNESCO in 1989. This magnificent site of nature is also said to be the tallest free standing mountain in the world, crowned by snow. Surely this incredible mountain is worth a trip. 

KILIMANJARO TRIP DETAILS:

• Skill level: This trip is open to all individuals in good physical condition and is a great first trip to altitude. It is a non-technical ascent and no previous mountaineering experience is required. Expedition style. Moderate hiking, No technical skills necessary, but you should be in good physical condition. There will be long days of strenuous hiking.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:

• The goal of the Wilderness Medical Society Mountain Medicine CME Conference is to provide participants with a unique environment to experience essential medical-related topics and learn skills while collaborating with expert faculty through educational activities including lectures, hands on work-shops, and Climbing Excursions.
• Development of this CME curriculum is formed by the following key objectives:
  o Provide educational opportunities based on core curriculum of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine.
  o Provide education of value to providers who care for the medical needs and also those involved with coordination of diving-related educational activities, including medical providers who must educate and instruct diver safety with their patients.
  o Provide education of interest to wilderness and austere-activity enthusiasts.
• After attending this conference, the participants will be able to:
  o Establish a set of treatment priorities for care of the sick or injured in remote settings.
  o Prevent, diagnose, and manage illnesses and injuries in austere environments.
  o Demonstrate increased knowledge and skill in recognizing and treating the most common illnesses and injuries encountered in mountain-related environments, including altitude medicine, hypothermia, cold injuries, and common back-country injuries.
  o Understand objective risk-assessment in wilderness environments from the perspective of the medical professional acting as a trip leader.
  o Understand the pathophysiology and management of acute emergencies related to remote environments.
