OVERVIEW

Paediatric Infection Management for the Microbiologist, Antimicrobial Pharmacist, Paediatrician and Adult Infectious Diseases Specialist is organized by ESCMID Study Group for Antimicrobial Stewardship (ESGAP), Paediatric working group and will be held from Sep 14 - 15, 2026 at House of Bavarian Agriculture Herrsching, Herrsching am ammersee, Bavaria, Germany.

Description:
Although providing advice on the management of children with infections (both common and complex infections) falls within the routine workload of clinical microbiologists and antimicrobial pharmacists working in general hospitals across Europe, as well as adult infectious diseases specialists on occasion, there are many fundamental differences between adults and children that impact on clinical decision making. This course aims to address some of these issues through a series of case-based interactive workshops. Active participation will be maintained through face to face discussions and real-time voting. This case-based interactive approach has been used annually at various international infection conferences and has received excellent feedback from microbiologists, pharmacists and infectious diseases specialists worldwide.

Objectives:

  • Understand the fundamental differences between managing infections in children and adults, including physiological, pharmacokinetic, and clinical considerations.
  • Enhance clinical decision-making skills in managing both common and complex infections commonly encountered in paediatric patients, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and sepsis.
  • Develop proficiency in applying evidence-based guidelines and principles to develop optimal management strategies for paediatric infections, taking into account age, weight, and underlying medical conditions.
  • Apply knowledge and skills gained to improve clinical practice and patient outcomes in paediatric infectious diseases management, with a focus on optimising antimicrobial therapy and reducing the emergence of antimicrobial resistance.
  • Develop strategies for ongoing professional development and collaboration to address the unique challenges of paediatric infectious diseases management in general hospitals across Europe and beyond.
