Description:
This course will focus on providing therapists with various treatment ideas to improve function for patients with CVA, TBI, and other neurological deficits. The latest research and evidence will be highlighted emphasizing the importance of neuroplasticity and motor learning, including the specifics of how to integrate the research into the realities of practice. The presentation includes the use of updated digital video to practice movement analysis and demonstrate the impact of different interventions. Using attendees’ case examples, common impairments causing functional limitations will be identified and various treatment options will be discussed considering the level of the patient and clinic setting. In addition, options for improving the function of patients with Pusher Syndrome will be reviewed. Upon completion of this course, therapists will have learned an evidence-based approach for choosing treatment strategies while improving their clinical reasoning skills working with this patient population. Course instruction methods includes lecture, demonstration, videos, case studies and question/answers.

Objectives: 
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain at least 2 theories of neuroplasticity using the latest research
  2. Indicate at least 3 differences between normal and compensatory treatments in a patient with a neurological deficit
  3. Explain the role of impairments, functional limitations, and participation restrictions in treating the neurological patient
  4. Develop at least 3 appropriate treatment techniques to improve functional tasks for the neurological patient in supine, sitting, and/or standing
  5. Identify at least 2 common causes of shoulder pain in the client with a neurological deficit
  6. Identify at least 2 treatment techniques to facilitate shoulder function in the client with a neurological deficit
  7. Compare and contrast 3 common gait deviations resulting from lower extremity tonicity and appropriate treatments.
  8. Identify at least 2 common problems with patients with pusher syndrome and how to best adjust the environment for treatment.
