Description:

Bronchoscopy is a central diagnostic and therapeutic method in pulmonary medicine, intensive care and thoracic surgery. The complexity of the technique and the increasing range of applications – including endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), transbronchial biopsies and therapeutic interventions – place high demands on theoretical knowledge, technical skill and patient safety.

Overall goals

To ensure a uniform level of education regardless of geographical area or healthcare provider.

A standardized course offers equivalent basic training, reduces variation in clinical skills, and gives course participants the opportunity to practice elements in a safe environment before clinical application.

Results for the participant

• Explain the indications for flexible and straight bronchoscopy. (“Demonstrate knowledge” Lecture, literature review)
• Describe the handling and performance of endobronchial ultrasound. ("Be aware" Lecture, literature review, film)
• Explain sampling techniques such as bronchial biopsy, transbronchial fine needle aspiration and bronchoalveolar lavage and explain the indication for each of these. ("Demonstrate knowledge" Lecture, literature review)
• Prescribe individually adapted premedication as well as manage patients who belong to a risk group, for example patients treated with anticoagulants. ("Demonstrate knowledge" Lecture, literature reading)
• Orient yourself in the bronchial tree and find and name the different segments and subsegments of the lung. (“Know” Practical exercise)
• Handle medical equipment and use video technology and imaging. Write a bronchoscopy report. ("Demonstrate knowledge" Lecture, literature reading, practice)
