Description:
This course will provide therapists with an overview of examination and treatment tools that can be objectively utilized to enhance intervention prescription and optimize outcomes for ICU patients. Data in the literature strongly supports the importance of early and frequent mobilization of the patient in the ICU environment. However, treating in the ICU can be quite intimidating, especially to the novice and even sometimes the experienced physical therapist. Topics covered will include objective measures that can be utilized in the ICU, lab values pertinent to the ICU patient, lines/tubes/monitors of the ICU, intervention planning and how to mobilize the patient on a ventilator. The course will provide concepts to help therapists to use high-level clinical decision-making skills to ensure optimal patient treatment while maintaining patient safety with the medically complex patients.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this course the participants will be able to:

1. Identify at least 3 sources of literature and data that support early mobilization in the ICU.
2. Correctly define at least 2roles with the respective importance of interdisciplinary communication in the ICU.
3. Name at least 3 lab values significant to the ICU environment that relate to medical rehabilitation.
4. Use the clinical decision guidelines to correctly determine whether or not it is safe to mobilize a patient in the ICU environment.
5. Name at least 3 objective measures that can be used in the ICU environment to monitor patient progress and outcomes.
6. Identify at least 2 basic and 2 advanced monitoring, airways and lines found in the ICU environment.
7. Differentiate between the types of ventilator alarms, setting and management in the ICU.
8. Identify at least 3 lab values that are important in the mobilization of patients with intra-aortic balloon pumps, ECMO, or ventricular assist devices
9. Describe the parameters (current type, rate, intensity, duration) for the use functional electrical stimulation with patients in the ICU based on course content.
