Description:
This course will focus on use of static and dynamic taping techniques to facilitate improved alignment and muscle reeducation for function. Developmental and biomechanics in relation to treatment will be reviewed. Tapes and interventions used include: rigid strapping tape, Kinesio tape ®, velcro patches with elastic straps, neoprene wraps, compression garments and Thera Togs™. Review of developmental biomechanics and relation to treatment are also included.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify at least 2 specific developmental features in trunk, upper and lower extremities in both the typically and atypically developing children.
  2. Explain the importance of 3 components of proper alignment contribute to the support and initiation of movement patterns in the pediatric population.
  3. Apply knowledge of biomechanical alignment and range of motion to describe the rationale for specific taping and strapping techniques utilized in patients with impairments secondary to alignment issues.
  4. Based on the alignment dysfunction identified, develop at least 2 treatment options using rigid strapping tape, Kinesio Tape®, Velcro patches with elastic straps, Fabrifoam, or compression orthotics.
  5. Identify at least 3 contraindications to taping.
  6. Summarize 2 pros and cons for each of the following taping materials: Leukotape, Hypafix, Kinesio® Tape, and Fabrifoam.
  7. Explain the use of taping, strapping and compression orthotics as a way to improve alignment for function- for ADLs, fine motor skills, sit balance, and gait .
  8. Be able to explain removal instructions and understand precautions and contraindications associated with taping and strapping for the pediatric population.
  9. Select at least 2 malalignments of the upper extremity, lower extremity and trunk and demonstrate an appropriate corrective taping / strapping technique.
