National spirometry card is organized by Physicians' Institute for Professional Development in Healthcare / Lakarnas institut for professionell utveckling i sjukvarden (LIPUS) and will be held from Dec 02 - 03, 2025 at CRC - Clinical Research Center, Malmo, Skane, Sweden.

Description:
Spirometry together with anamnesis and clinical examination findings can often provide a correct diagnosis in asthma and COPD. Correct diagnosis is a prerequisite for correct treatment of the patient. Interpretation of spirometry results requires knowledge and training. The purpose of the course is to quality assure lung function measurements from patient information and examination procedure to interpretation of the spirometry result.

Overall goals:
The overall goal of the course is to provide increased knowledge and skills regarding the diagnosis and treatment of common lung diseases such as asthma and COPD.

Learning objectives:

After completing the training, the course participant should be able to:

  • Explain the indications and contraindications for spirometry testing.
  • Describe the principles of how different types of measuring equipment work.
  • Identify sources of error in spirometry testing.
  • Explain why functional testing and calibration of equipment and basic hygiene routines are important.
  • Reflect on the importance of the different stages of conducting the survey.
  • Explain the purpose of standardized documentation of the spirometry examination and the interpretation of results.
  • Explain the most important principles of respiratory physiology.
  • Apply interpretation of the most important volumes and flows in dynamic spirometry (FEV1, FVC and FEV1/FVC).
  • Explain the principles of PEF measurement and FEV1/FEV6 measurement.
  • Assess when non-forced maneuver is indicated in spirometry performance (SVC).
  • Critically review the significance of lung function measurement in diagnostics in relation to the patient's history and status (interpret results according to "the three steps").
  • Describe different reference values ??and how they are used.
  • Give examples of differences in pathophysiology, etiology and clinical manifestations between the obstructive lung diseases commonly found in the population (asthma and COPD).

After completing the course, participants should also be able to:

  • Perform spirometry, FEV1/FEV6 measurement (screening instrument) and PEF measurement.
  • Document the results in the medical record and the Respiratory Registry in a standardized manner.
  • Show how to give the patient relevant information before, during and after the examination.
  • Evaluate the results of the survey and reflect on its significance.
  • Explain how to treat the patient based on their individual circumstances, expectations and concerns (person-centered approach) in connection with the spirometry examination and when the results are communicated.
