Description:
Dizziness is a common cause of doctor visits (Kroenke et al Am J Med 1990) and is estimated to affect 15-20% of adults annually. In the Skåne region, dizziness accounts for between 2 and 3% of all patient visits to health centers (Spreerapport 2010), in Norrland> 2% of all emergency visits to hospitals (Ljunggren et al. Eur Neurol 2018). In the United States, dizziness is the 3rd most common cause of patient visits under the age of 65 and the most common among patients> 65 (Kroenke et al Am J Med 1989). Studies have also shown that half of dizzy patients leave the doctor's visit without being diagnosed, and about half of patients who were diagnosed still do not feel helped.

Dizziness diagnostics entails large and broad knowledge requirements in terms of recognizing patterns in medical histories, examining and interpreting clinical and more or less advanced technical examinations. Missing the correct diagnosis and treatment in the onset of dizziness can in itself lead to the onset of chronic dizziness and longer treatment / rehabilitation (Staab et al J Vestib Res 2017), in addition to absence from gainful employment / education and not least to a higher total cost (Granberg- Sandlund et al Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol 2019).

Objectives:
Overall goals
To provide a scientifically and clinically updated review of acute and chronic dizziness diseases and their treatment, as well as to get an overview of and be able to interpret the most modern research methods that have been developed in recent decades.

Results for the participant
The course participant will learn about acute and chronic dizziness, what medical history, status findings and more advanced examinations look like in various diseases, provide correct information and in each case initiate the right medical measures and, if necessary, choose the right type of radiological investigation.

The course participant must learn to interpret laboratory examinations and be able to link these to clinical examination findings and medical history.

Results for patient and society
Today, it takes a long time before dizzy patients receive the correct diagnosis and treatment, which means that the illness period is extended, with not only an impact for the patient but also for relatives. Knowledge and experience of dizziness diseases is today generally low and the course should contribute to better care in both acute and long-term illness. By being able to prescribe correct medical and physiotherapeutic measures, long periods of sick leave can be avoided, as can many and cumbersome referrals.
